Julie and Alex both deeply value close friends, their cat, and their beloved home. It is a space that formed many of their best memories as a couple and had been thoughtfully decorated to reflect their vintage personalities. The morning of the wedding, Julie and her bridesmaids prepared for the wedding day in the comfort of the living room. The space was filled with film photography cameras, laughter, and special mementos of the couple’s relationship through the years. Upon finishing hair and make-up, the bridesmaids gathered in the room, quietly anticipating the first reveal of the bride in her dress. The moment celebrated the friendships that most deeply supported Julie and Alex on their final day as an engaged couple.
After heartfelt conversation and hugs, the bridesmaids prepared to travel to the ceremony site, while Julie anticipated her groom. Alex, similarly, also prepared for the day with his groomsmen in a friend’s home. The couple had mentioned beforehand the importance of their first look— it would be a tranquil moment for them to reflect on their relationship and celebrate the day together. Alex arrived in a vintage car that encompassed many aspects of the retro-inspired decor of the wedding day. The couple also made the intentional decision of hosting their “first look” in their home too. The reveal released the anticipatory pre-ceremony anxieties and allowed the couple to feel comfortable as each genuine moment unfolded. Julie and Alex began their bridal portraits with many of the core values that started their days together.
Julie and Alex’s relationship started at the University of Alberta. They quickly bonded over thrifting, film photography, and all things vintage. While planning the intentional aspects of their day, the University of Alberta was swiftly highlighted as a location that was significant in their relationship. The Rutherford House set the backdrop for an old-brick style theme that would embody their vintage values. We continued on Chancellor’s Walk to the Faculty of Arts and Business greeneries that become one of the highlights of the day. Julie and Alex discovered a quiet and shaded spot where they could share their excitement for their upcoming ceremony. During these moments, the two desired film photography to be incorporated into their day (visuals at the top and below). The scene depicted a classically romantic story, filled with frolicking, spinning, and a devoted abandon to their special day.
Edmonton’s High Level Street Car is a touring train car that traces the path of former routes of the Canadian Pacific Railway. While incorporating their most important values, Julie and Alex desired a unique feel to their once-in-a-lifetime wedding day— the High Level Street Car was perfect for this! The streetcar shifted across the rails, eventually halting on the High Level Bridge of Edmonton. The couple and guests overlooked the stunning river valley as the ceremony began. The August afternoon was made memorable through handwritten vows, an exchange of rings, and a first kiss. The newlyweds intentionally celebrated the instance through hugs and gratitude as they greeted all of their guests. Eventually arriving at the back of the streetcar, Julie and Alex continued capturing several “just married” photographs to seal the memory. The tour stopped once more at a secluded staircase filled with greenery to add more variety to the experience. The authenticity of the event set the standard for the remainder of the night as everyone enjoyed themselves and celebrated.
The Little Red Brick Cafe was an excellent space for Julie and Alex to fully express their vintage-styled reception. The tablescapes were decorated with simple chic table clothes accented with sage green napkins. The florals provided a delicate vibrancy that evoked feelings of thankfulness, warmth, and family. Many of the other decorated items were handmade (welcome sign) or intentionally designed to personalize the wedding (matchbooks). The welcome table was complimented with small retro prints of postcards from another era. The festivities became lively once Julie and Alex join the party. Alongside meaningful speeches from friends and family, the night reminisced upon their upbringing, their identities, and the simple touches that made life beautiful.
